“As the myth goes, Alkyone (Halcyone) before being turned into a bird, she was a very beautiful woman, the daughter of Aeolus, god of winds and Enarete.
Alkyonewas married to Ceyx. Their union was perfect, they were so happy together that they started believing they were not ordinary humans.
Eventually they thought they were equal to the gods (hubris)… When Zeus found out, he was so mad that one day that Ceyx was at the sea with his ship, she struck it down with a lightning. The ship was destroyed and Ceyx fell in the angry waves and drowned.
When Alkyone found out she was desperate and run to the beach in hopes that she would find her loved one there, but all she found was some broken ship wood washed ashore by the sea. She then started crying inconsolably. For days and nights she mourned for the loss of her loved one. In the end, Zeus felt sorry for her and transformed her into a bird. A very beautiful bird that was named after her and lives next to the sea ever since, as if it’s still waiting for her lost Ceyx to appear through the waves.
But her suffering was not over yet, because Alkyone was laying her eggs during winter and sat on them at the shore rocks. But angry waves would crash against the rocks and destroy her nest and the eggs inside. Zeus again felt sorry for her and thus order Aeolus her father that for fifteen days (today known as “Halcyone days”) within the heart of winter, winds were to cease and the sun was to be shiny. That would be enough for Alkiόni to hatch her eggs and have her young hatchlings in piece and quiet.”
If you wish your life to be like one of those Halcyon’s days with shining sun, no clouds and winds and a sky so blue and full with peace, you know where you may find our Alkyone..
Alkyone has been to the vet and is very healthy. She was born at some point in June 2017 and is located in Athens. She will be given for adoption in the area of Attica only, either neutered or under the condition of being neutered when she comes of age. The new owner will cover the expense of her microchip.
